In people’s haunt i build my cot; Of wheel's and hoof's noise i hear not. How can it leave on me no trace? Secluded heart makes secluded place.
I pick fenceside asters at will; Carefree i see the southern hill. The mountain air's fresh day and night; Together birds go home in flight. What revelation at this view? Words fail if I try to tell you.

10月11日 Central Park Cafe 水岸咖啡![]() Central Park Cafe is another haven of tranquillity for me besides Xiamen Library.
When it all begins to fall into placeThe following paragraphs are quoted from Xie Guozhong's blog. In an age when every expert manages to predict what is exactly the opposite, I wouldn't expect any predictions of our financial outlook. But I thank Xie because things at least begin to fall into place.
"A case in point is the US Savings and Loans crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The US Federal Reserve kept monetary policy loose to help the banking system. The dollar went into a prolonged bear market. During the descent, Asian economies that pegged their currencies to the dollar could increase money supply and lending without worrying about devaluation. The money couldn't leave home due to the dollar's poor outlook so it went into asset markets.
When the dollar began to rebound, in 1996, Asian economies came under tightening pressure that burst their asset bubbles. The collapsing asset prices triggered capital outflows that reinforced asset deflation. Asset deflation destroyed their banking systems. In short, the US banking crisis created the environment for a credit boom in Asia. When US banks recovered, Asian banks collapsed. Is China heading down the same path? There are many anecdotes to support the comparison. Property prices in Southeast Asia became higher than those in the US. But "experts" and government officials had stories to explain it, even though their per capita income was one-tenth that of the US. Their banks commanded huge market capitalisations, as financial markets extended their growth ad infinitum. The same thing is happening in China today. Live from Ubud, Bali 7月10日 Life in Israel"As for me, after quiting a 3 month boring job, I have been living in a farm in Nahalal for the last 3 weeks and enjoying every minute here." Some summer projects in farm are building an indoor kitchen, Digging and setting a rain collection pool and finishing another residential mud dome."

Truth. Astounding truth.
A piece of writing by Raymond Zhou, which every teacher should read.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last year, I received an e-mail story from a friend. She often sends me interesting postings with bi-cultural significance.
This one was about the difference between the Chinese and American ways of teaching the Cinderella story. Here it goes: In an American school, the teacher asks her students: What if Cinderella does not leave the ball at midnight? And they answer: She will resume her dirty look. So the teacher concludes, it shows the importance of being punctual and looking your best. She then follows up with a new perspective: Would the students do the same thing had they been her cruel stepmother? They hesitate, but say yes. The stepmother, suggests the teacher, is not totally evil. She loves her own children and her failing is her inability to love others. The teacher then probes what makes Cinderella resolve to go to the ball despite her stepmother's objections. It's the fairy godmother who offers help, say the students. That shows, continues the teacher, that everyone needs help from friends. The more friends you have, the better you'll cope with future problems.
She further examines Cinderella's decision to go to the ball. Even if nobody had objected, she would not have bothered if she had not wanted to go, so her determination was crucial. When you feel others don't love you, you should love yourself, and when others don't give you opportunities, give yourself more opportunities. The students finally examined possible loopholes in the fairytale and discussed how, although everything changed back at midnight, one of Cinderella's slippers did not, which seemed to go against the moral of the story. They were praised for having a sharp eye. Now, the Chinese methodology: Teacher: Did you all preview this text? Student: This is an old wives' tale. Everyone knows it. Who needs to prepare for it? Teacher: Who is the author? Is it Grimms or Andersen? And do you know the life story of the author? Student: We have eyes and the answer is printed in the text. Teacher: What's the significance of this story? Student: It sounds so serious it looks like we are going to be tested later on. Teacher: Now, let's get to the text. Who can divide it into sections? Student: The beginning, the middle, and the last section, as usual. Teacher: Now, about this sentence, is it a simile or a metaphor? Several students start to doze off. Teacher: If I change this particular word, it won't be as good as the one in the text? Why did the author have that word choice? More students doze off. Teacher: Can we change the place of these two sentences? And why not? Most students fall asleep. Teacher: Now, if you don't listen in class, you cannot get high scores; and without high scores you cannot get into colleges; and without college, you can't... This is the way of life. End of story.
Groundhog Day![]() Don't judge the movie in the first fifteen minutes. A great comedy is worth a little bit patience of yours.
The movie came out in 1993, the same year as "Sleepless in Seattle", but not as boring as that one, I assure you.
The movie embodies the very essence (if there is such a thing) of the golden age of the 1990s, the innocence and the spirit, yet somehow at the same time manages to capture the hearts of today's audience with its ingenious plots.

【南方周末】本文网址:http://www.infzm.com/content/19174 9月23日 the No Spin Zone"the No Spin Zone" (by Bill O'Reilly) 的扉页上引用了这样一句话:
"A man flattened by an opponent
can get up again.
A man flattened by conformity
